Can Artists Change the World?

In an earlier post I mentioned a former professor of an academy complaining about his students and their distinctive lack of general knowledge and the inability to write correctly.

It has led to quite a discussion on linkedin which eventually took us to the ultimate question of what is wrong with the world and how could it be changed. Some seemed to think that you cannot do anything about it. After all who are we? What can we do as individuals where politicians fail?

Can artists make a difference? What if all the artists united and pledged to post a painting on a certain day of the month taking environmental or other important issues as a common subject? Would that get noticed? Would that improve awareness? Would that make the headlines? If thousands of paintings appeared on a certain day all concerned with the same subject and at regular intervals, I think it would.

About landscape painter

Painting and drawing have been my passion from early childhood. I have attended numerous exhibitions in England and Germany. Presented with the Judges Award at a show I now have one of my paintings on permanent display at a museum in Greater London with growing sales and commissions.

I will speak from My Tribal art point of view. Tribal Art in Africa was the power and had the ability to connect, unite, guard, make things happen, fight, forgive, empower. Everything which we now develop is what Real African art was to us. It changed the world then, it is still changing the world today. Its our first tech ever existed on earth, till when it was taken out, destroyed, or became big business except to Africans themseves. It will always change the world. Spiritually, economically, politically, medicine, architecturally, Etc. It influences music, fashion, and most of the modern art. Its our first documented book of humanity. All are documented in our Art. It has touched every one in this universe directly and indirectly.

Of course, that we can and we will!

  3. Or artists can change the world, yeah sure and that artists do for so long they exist,
Note the appearance that changes and keeps up with the times. This is in the clothing, home construction, automotive, paint and sculpt art etc etc. without the vision and imagination of an artist, this design would never have come into existence.

Art teaches nothing except the significance of life.
I think it was Henry Miller?

  5. That’s an interesting idea. It would be a massive undertaking, perhaps creating a most amazing result. I take my hat off to you if you have the time and energy to organise such an enormous collaborative effort ! And I promise to join in. I would also like to say that being an artist is a most privileged position. We (the artists) are dealing with beauty and the worthwhileness of existence and the right of every individual to be themselves and not have to follow some ready-made path. That is a luxury and it would be fascinating to see/hear the voices of many many artists all at once

    • Joanna, If we can get artists to persuade their friends to join us in this project I would propose a subject and a date for us to post out works on our blogs or websites. I would also inform the press about the venture.
